A league table with no playoffs can look like it needs no explanation: most points wins. But the Premier League runs several races at once inside one table, and each has its own line. The title race at the top, the Champions League places just below it, a European place or two after that, and at the bottom the relegation fight. This guide explains how the table is ordered, what each position earns, and how to do the arithmetic with three points a win.
Three points for a win
Every match hands out three points to the winner and none to the loser, or one point each for a draw. Over a 38-match season a club plays every other club twice, home and away. The scoring system rewards winning over not losing: two wins and a loss (six points) beats three draws (three points) by a wide margin.
This changes the arithmetic of a race. A club's maximum remaining haul is three points per match left. A six-point lead with two matches to play is safe; with three to play it is not. How the table is ordered
Clubs level on points are separated by:
- Goal difference, goals scored minus goals conceded.
- Goals scored.
- Head-to-head points between the level clubs.
- Head-to-head away goals.
- A play-off match at a neutral venue, but only when a title, Champions League place, or relegation is at stake. It has never been needed.
Goal difference is the workhorse. Because it accumulates over 38 matches and swings by several goals in a single afternoon, it is rarely level, and the later steps almost never come into play. On the final day of a tight race, fans watch two scores at once: the match and the goal difference.
The lines in the table

Two wrinkles keep this from being fully fixed:
- Cup winners take European spots. The FA Cup winner gets a Europa League place and the League Cup winner a Conference League place. If a cup winner has already qualified for Europe through the league, the spot passes down the table, which is how seventh can become a European finish.
- The coefficient bonus. UEFA awards two extra Champions League places each season to the two associations whose clubs performed best in Europe that year. When England earns one, fifth place goes to the league phase as well.
Because of this, our Premier League pages draw the lines after fourth, sixth and seventeenth. The top four is the hard line for the Champions League; fifth and sixth are the "Europe" tier; the bottom three are the drop.
Relegation math
Three clubs are relegated. The relegation fight is the mirror image of the top-four race, and it is often the more dramatic one because so many clubs are involved. Fifteen points from safety in March with ten to play sounds hopeless; five points from safety is a live race, because two wins and a favourable result elsewhere close it.
The old rule of thumb was that 40 points keeps you up. It has never failed, but it is conservative. The actual safety line, the points total of the club finishing seventeenth, has usually been between 35 and 38 in recent seasons. What a club still needs
The arithmetic for any race in a three-point league:
- To be certain of finishing above a rival, your lead in points must exceed three times the rival's remaining matches, or you must already be level with a better goal difference and the same number of matches left in a position where they cannot pass you.
- To be certain of the top four, you need to be uncatchable by the club in fifth: your points must be greater than their points plus three per match they have left.
- To be certain of safety, the same calculation against the club in eighteenth.
The Premier League page computes all of that live, including the "vs top 4" and "Safety" tiles and the season odds, which simulate the remaining fixtures with roughly a quarter of matches drawn.
Simulated odds for a league table
Simulating a soccer season differs from simulating a North American one in two ways. Draws exist, so each match has three outcomes, and there is no playoff to qualify for, so the odds are for finishing positions: title, top four, fifth and sixth, and relegation. Our model plays the remaining fixtures 1,500 times a night and reports each of those. It regresses early-season form heavily, because two matchweeks is not much evidence, which is why the odds in August are flatter than the table suggests.
